Enhancing Global Connectivity and Reducing Latency Across Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure

Overview

Nuno Cloud addressed a critical connectivity challenge for a client with multi-continental operations. The client's primary transaction platform was based in the USA, while a substantial portion of their customer base was in Brazil, causing latency issues and inconsistent data transmission. Nuno Cloud was tasked with designing a hybrid cloud solution that could bridge these geographical divides, ensuring consistent, high-speed connectivity for all users.

Solution

To meet these demands, Nuno Cloud implemented a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) architecture integrated with hybrid cloud networking strategies, connecting the client's data centers and cloud resources across multiple regions. This solution provided a direct, secure communication channel between Brazil-based customer systems and the US-based transaction platform, overcoming limitations typically seen with traditional VPNs.

Cloud-Native Redundancy and High Availability

Nuno Cloud configured advanced geolocation-based routing and load balancing across cloud and on-premises resources to ensure optimal data flow, regardless of the user's location. This setup allowed for intelligent traffic distribution and significantly reduced latency by dynamically routing requests to the nearest or most responsive endpoints.

Automated Infrastructure and Deployment

Leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform and other cloud-native automation tools, Nuno Cloud established processes to automate configuration updates and manage connectivity layers seamlessly. This approach enabled rapid scaling and deployment of new configurations across hybrid environments, ensuring infrastructure remained synchronized and resilient across regions.

Results

The VPLS hybrid cloud solution greatly enhanced connectivity, resolving latency issues and increasing platform availability. The client's SLA improved from 96% to 99% due to the stability and efficiency gained from this architecture, providing their international customer base with stable, high-speed connectivity. This enhancement not only boosted operational efficiency but also laid a robust foundation for scalable, future-ready network infrastructure, empowering the client to pursue ongoing global expansion.

Main Tools and Cloud-Native Solutions

Hybrid Cloud and Network Interconnection

  • AWS Direct Connect: Created a dedicated, low-latency link between on-premises systems and AWS, optimizing data transfer.
  • VPLS Integration: Linked regional data centers with cloud resources, providing a secure and resilient interconnection backbone.

Routing and Load Balancing

  • AWS Global Accelerator: Enhanced connectivity by routing traffic based on geolocation to reduce latency for end users across regions.
  • AWS ELB (Elastic Load Balancing): Managed traffic distribution across hybrid resources, ensuring optimal resource usage and high availability.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Automation

  • Terraform: Deployed and managed networking and connectivity configurations for a synchronized, cross-region setup.
  • AWS Lambda and EventBridge: Used to automate configuration updates and dynamically manage routing policies, ensuring rapid response to changes in demand

Monitoring and Performance Optimization

  • AWS CloudWatch: Continuously monitored network performance, latency, and availability metrics to proactively resolve potential issues.
  • AWS Route 53: Configured advanced DNS settings for geolocation-based traffic management, improving latency and service reliability for users.
